Synopsis:

Watch Trailer by clicking here.

In Bye Bye Tiberias, Lina Soualem’s second feature film, she takes a poignant journey into her family’s history. The film explores the life of her mother, acclaimed actress Hiam Abbass (Emmy-nominated for Succession), who left her Palestinian village in her early twenties to pursue her dream of becoming an actress in Europe, leaving behind her mother, grandmother, and seven sisters. Thirty years later, Lina returns with her mother to their native village and delves into the questions that have long remained unanswered about her mother’s bold choices and her family’s history.

Through a combination of family footage from the nineties, historical archives, and scenes from present-day Palestine, Bye Bye Tiberias reveals the strength and resilience of four generations of Palestinian women who have carried the weight of exile, dispossession, and heartbreak while preserving their legacy through their deep familial bonds.

Selected as Palestine’s entry for Best International Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards, this film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, won the prestigious Grierson Award at the BFI London Film Festival, made its North American Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and shared the jury prize at the Marrakech International Film Festival.

This is an important and beautifully crafted portrayal of Arab women’s lives, filled with complexity and courage.
