Forced Gynecological Procedures and Other Gendered Abuses in Detention

Monday, November 9, 2020 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | Virtual

This discussion is sponsored by the Georgetown University Gender+ Justice Initiative, the Human Rights Institute, and the Prisons and Justice Initiative.

In September 2020, nonconsensual sterilizations and abuses on immigrant women were reported by a whistleblower, Dawn Woolen, a long-time nurse in Irwin federal immigration detention center in Georgia. This panel discussion will give an overview of patterns of gendered violence practices taking place in (ICE) detention centers as well as shed light on how activist and advocacy groups are fighting to address the issue. Moderated by Denise Brennan, Professor and Chair of Anthropology, Georgetown University.

Panelists:

Alejandra Pablos, Repro Justice Organizer, Storyteller, #KeepAleFree – Deportation Defense Campaign

Azadeh Shahshahani, Legal and Advocacy Director, Project South

Silky Shah, Executive Director, Detention Watch Network
