Marina Martes

Marina Martes (she/her) is an LL.M Candidate in International Legal Studies at Georgetown Law Center (2021-22). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, Brazil – PUC/SP (2016), and a master’s degree in International Trade Law at the University of São Paulo, Brazil – USP (2021). Marina has worked for four years at the international trade practice of Veirano Advogados, a top-tier law firm in Brazil. She is also the co-founder and COO of NGO Rede Comadres, which supports women in unassisted regions in Brazil by developing and organizing female support networks.

Research Project: The situation of refugees and asylum seekers of diverse gender and intersex identities in the U.S. immigration process

The purpose of this research is to develop a new resettlement process for gender-diverse refugees that avoids the security risks faced by this population in the present process of migration in the United States. The objective of the current study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the violence and the social and legal barriers that refugees and asylum seekers of diverse gender identities have to face throughout the immigrant process in the U.S.
