Marina Martes

Marina Martes (she/her) is an LL.M Candidate in International Legal Studies at Georgetown Law Center (2021-22). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, Brazil – PUC/SP (2016), and a master’s degree in International Trade Law at the University of São Paulo, Brazil – USP (2021). Marina has worked for four years at the international trade practice of Veirano Advogados, a top-tier law firm in Brazil. She is also the co-founder and COO of NGO Rede Comadres, which supports women in unassisted regions in Brazil by developing and organizing female support networks.

 

Project: The situation of refugees and asylum seekers of diverse gender and intersex identities in the U.S. immigration process
The purpose of this research, done in collaboration with Valentina Gonzalez Blanco, is to develop a new resettlement process for gender-diverse refugees that avoids the security risks faced by this population in the present process of migration in the United States. The objective of the current study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the violence and the social and legal barriers that refugees and asylum seekers of diverse gender identities have to face throughout the immigrant process in the U.S.
