About the speaker:
Carrie N. Baker (she/her) is an American lawyer and the Sylvia Dlugasch Bauman Professor of American Studies at Smith College, where she also serves as Chair of the Program for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Additionally, Baker co-founded and previously co-directed the certificate program in Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice offered by the Five College Consortium.
She has published five books, including The Women’s Movement Against Sexual Harassment (2007) and Abortion Pills: US History and Politics (2024), and has written extensively on topics such as sexual harassment, sex trafficking, violence against women, and reproductive rights.
In addition to her academic work, Baker contributes to Ms. Magazine and co-chairs the Ms. Committee of Scholars, which bridges academic scholarship and feminist public writing. She also maintains a monthly column in the Daily Hampshire Gazette and hosts a monthly radio show titled Feminist Futures on WHMP in Northampton, MA. Furthermore, Baker is a former president of the Abortion Rights Fund of Western Massachusetts and currently serves on the board of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts.
